12 Stages of Burnout: There are different phases or stages of the burnout process and finding what stage you are at is very vital – Also wondering how you actually got into a burnout?  Exactly finding out is one of the first things I did when I got home.  In a long story of many pages, I described the run-up to my burnout.  Every cup that filled my bucket was discussed. From the first cup that went into the bucket until the drop dropped my bucket.

The psychologists Herbert Freudenberger and Gail North have found that you are proceeding to a burn-out 12 phases. The phases do not need to be chronological.

  1. The compulsion to prove yourself. 
    This often starts with excessive ambition. And say yourself, who was not ever young and ambitious?Probably you’re just like I grew up with the idea of the world of work.
    You can get everything if you’re doing hard enough. The need to make a career is being poured into the paper. If you make a career, you are earning money and everything goes into the capitalist world. The will to prove yourself turns into a determination that eventually becomes compulsive.
  2. You work harder. 
    Because you try to prove yourself, you set the bar high. You may also try to adapt yourself to an organization where you are not in your place. You expect a lot of yourself. Therefore you take more hay on your fork than you would normally do.You concentrate fully on your work and shift the rest aside. You do not like to work out of your hands and create such an indispensability. You can show how beautiful work you can do in your own mind and how indispensable you are for the company.
  3. You ignore your own needs. 
    Because you have completely focused on your work, you do not have time for other things. Friends, family, hobbies, sports, eating, drinking, sleeping, it’s all not necessary and not important. You spend so much more time for your work.
  4. Displacement of conflicts. 
    You instinctual know that something is not doing well, but cannot accurately indicate what makes it happen. You are unable to find the cause of the conflict that begins to play in you. Now the first psychological symptoms may appear.
  5. Reviewing your values. 
    In this phase, you start closing down for others and avoiding conflicts. You ignore your physical complaints and needs and change your perception of reality. Whatever physical complaints you have in the meantime, stress is, in any event, not the cause.
  6. You deny emerging issues. 
    You become intolerant and you’re no longer in social contacts. If you have to do something social, it feels almost unbearable. All of your problems are due to the high time pressure under which you work and the amount of work you need to do.
    The problems have nothing to do with how you are changed you find yourself.
  7. You will retreat. 
    You have minimized your social contacts and live almost like a hermit. You try to meet man and power with your employer’s expectations and to execute your work exactly as it should. In order to relax, you can sometimes take alcohol or drugs. You can feel that you have no direction in your life. Your situation seems futile.
  8. Your behavior changes. 
    Everyone in your immediate vicinity, family, friends, and colleagues has noticed that you behave differently.
  9. De-personalization. 
    You lose the contact with yourself. It may even be that you or others are no longer considered valuable. You have no idea more of your personal needs and live in the present. Your life turns off as an endless mechanism.
  10. Inner emptiness. 
    You feel empty inside and to compensate for this you can show all kinds of excessive behavior. Consider eating bites, consuming too much alcohol or drugs.
  11. Depression. 
    A burnout can coincide with depression. In that case, you feel exhausted. Your situation seems futile. You feel indifferent and think you have no future. Life is no longer useful. The typical symptoms of depression occur.
  12. The Burn-out Syndrome. 
    You are physically and emotionally fully integrated. It is now time to seek help. In the event of depression, suicidal thoughts may cause a headache.

The Maslach Burn-out Inventory is the most commonly used test to determine a burnout. The test is divided into three parts:

  1. Exhaustion
  2. Depersonalization
  3. Personal Performance

If you look closely at the 12 phases above, you can find one or two parts from the Maslach Burnout Inventory in most phases.

For example, in Phase 3 and 4 you will see all the first signs of removal of self or depersonalization and exhaustion.

In Phase 5 and 6, you see that in the area of personal performance the dissatisfaction increases. You work under pressure to get less work out of your work. Depletion also plays a role here.

The Maslach Burnout Inventory says you do not have to score high on all three components before you can speak of a burnout.

For example, if someone scores high on exhaustion and low on the other two parts, there may already be a slight burnout.

Therefore, you do not have to go through all the phases described above before you can speak of a burnout.
In an earlier article, I have discussed five preliminary burnouts. That article was about a number of physical complaints that are often ignored in relation to stress.

Almost all of these physical complaints return to phase 5. I think this is the phase in which most people will recognize afterward that they actually knew, but did not want to give it.
Most people with a burnout will still have a number of phases after phase 5 before they call and seek help.
